10 Essential Tips for First-Time International Travelers

Check your passport first. Many countries need six months of validity left on the day you arrive, and some want two blank pages. Renewing takes weeks, so do it before you book.

Book the flight, then the first two nights, then stop. Leaving some of the trip unplanned is how you find the places you remember.

Tell your bank where you are going, carry two cards from different banks, and keep some local cash for the airport taxi.

Photograph your passport, tickets and insurance and keep them in your email as well as your phone. If you lose the phone, you still have them.

Buy travel insurance the day you book, not the day you leave. It is what covers you if you have to cancel.

How to Pack Smart for Your Next Adventure

Start with the weather and the airline's bag allowance, then work backwards. Most trips need far less than you think.

Pack outfits, not items: three bottoms and five tops that all go together cover a week. Roll soft clothes, fold the rest, and use a packing cube per day or per kind.

Keep a change of clothes, medicine, chargers and documents in your hand luggage. If your bag is late, the first day is still fine.

Leave space. You will bring something home.
